The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is an initiative created by the Cape Town based Kahuna Surfing Academy that showcases the global nature of the surfing community, highlights their environmental concerns and issues a "call to action" on how we can reduce our impact on climate change.

By staging attempts on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ on beaches worldwide on the first Sunday in September annually, Earthwave provides a platform for surfers of every age and ability to participate in an enjoyable group activity.

Leveraging the newsworthiness of world record attempts, Earthwave seeks to raise awareness of the threat of Global Warming and its effects on our oceans and waves while mobilizing the trendsetting surfing fraternity through practical advice on how to become part of the solution to the most devastating problem ever faced by mankind.

Global Warming is the greatest threat facing mankind today. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to learn more about this problem and then become proactive in reducing our impact on the environment. PAUL BOTHA

Godfathers of the Ocean announce intentions for Earthwave Australia 2008

It was announced today by former world professional surfer Michael ‘Munga’ Barry that his surf school, Godfathers of the Ocean will attempt to break the Guinness World record in 2008 by having the most surfers riding a wave simultaneously for five second. The announcement was made while surfing communities around the globe today staged their own world record attempt, an initiative of Earthwave Global surf challenge in aid of highlighting global awareness and environmental concerns.
Munga Barry’s Godfathers of the Ocean surf School held a free surf session today to launch the Earthwave Global surf challenge in Australia. Mum, Dads and kids turned up to the beach to receive tips from the former Pro surfer, although a world record attempt was not on the cards today, it was a great opportunity to introduce the Earthwave project to Australian shores.
Munga said today, “The growing concern for environmental issues should be everybody’s concern and we need to get the communities together and start initiating some changes. The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to do that and at the same time have some fun, the true Aussie way - surfing”. “We are looking forward to staging this event again next year, we have a huge day planned already with live music in the park, raffles, auctions items and guest appearances from some of our surfing and sporting celebrities and more”, said Munga.
Munga gave praise to the Kahuna Surfing Academy base in Cape Town South Africa who founded the Earthwave project and to all other organizations around the globe who were staging their own event today; however Munga says look out next year as the record will fall on the Goldie!

Motivated by the immense interest in the record breaking attempt on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave simultaneously’ in Cape Town in September 2006 and inspired by Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth”, the Kahuna Surfing Academy (KSA) created the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge.

Convinced that they could break the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ after the paltry total of 44 was confirmed as the new record by the Lahinch Surf School in May 2006, the duo of veteran watersports promoter Paul Botha and his son Dene, South Africa’s highest internationally qualified surf instructor, registered an attempt on the record with the GWR organisation in London.
