The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is an initiative created by the Cape Town based Kahuna Surfing Academy that showcases the global nature of the surfing community, highlights their environmental concerns and issues a "call to action" on how we can reduce our impact on climate change.

By staging attempts on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ on beaches worldwide on the first Sunday in September annually, Earthwave provides a platform for surfers of every age and ability to participate in an enjoyable group activity.

Leveraging the newsworthiness of world record attempts, Earthwave seeks to raise awareness of the threat of Global Warming and its effects on our oceans and waves while mobilizing the trendsetting surfing fraternity through practical advice on how to become part of the solution to the most devastating problem ever faced by mankind.

Global Warming is the greatest threat facing mankind today. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to learn more about this problem and then become proactive in reducing our impact on the environment. PAUL BOTHA

Prizes galore and fun for all at Earthwave Cape Town on Sunday

Tens of thousands of Rand’s worth of prizes, from wetsuits to water purifiers, accommodation packages to clothing hampers, will be up for grabs at the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge at Muizenberg in Cape Town on Sunday, when virtually everyone who attends will go home with something.

Anchored by an attempt on the Guinness World Record for the most surfers riding one wave simultaneously, where the organisers are hoping to beat the record setting 73 surfers achieved in September last year, the event will provide fun for everyone with activities ranging from free surfing lessons and yoga sessions as well as all manner of fund raising competitions, lucky draws and more.

There will also be talks and demonstrations on sharks, environmental concerns and how to reduce your impact on climate change, the theme of Earthwave which is staging similar events on the same day in seven countries around the globe to increase awareness of Global Warming and raise funds for worthy ecological causes.

“Everyone at Muizenberg on Sunday is in for a great time,” said Dene Botha from the Kahuna Surfing Academy, the organisers of Earthwave. “From the Shark Spotters and SPU talks through the free surf lessons and yoga sessions, the Surfboard Art Challenge auctions, raffles and Dig for Gold to all those wanting to take part in the world record attempt and attend the after-party at the Brass Bell, there’s something for young and old to see, hear or participate in.”

Sunday’s action kicks off with talks and displays in the marquee tent from 10am followed by the free surf lessons conducted by experts from the Surf Shack, Learn2Surf and Cape Town Surf Adventures starting at 11am, while the free Mocean Yoga Sessions for all ages will be conducted throughout the day by Carol Bradbury

The 10 beautifully painted and airbrushed surfboards in the Surfboard Art Challenge will be on display with the first four being auctioned at midday by surf prediction guru Steve Pike from Wavescape while the participants register for the world record attempt.

These surfboards are true works of art provided by the country’s top manufacturers like locals Dutchie, Stubby, Town & Country and Magic Shot, from Rebel and Darcy in the Eastern Cape and Spider, Gee Force, Bilt, Clayton and F22 in Durban.

All the youngsters, and the young at heart, look forward to the Dig for Gold where vouchers for valuable prizes are buried in the sand. Prizes include wetsuits from Reef and O’Neill, a R1 500 clothing hamper from Billabong, product vouchers from Rusty, Regal Cycles and AP Jones and meal vouchers for some of the Peninsula’s top restaurants such as Harbour House, Fogeys, 783, Empire Café, Rafiki’s, Balmoral, British Bulldog and the Olive Station.

A raffle will run all day where lucky ticket holders can win a water purifier from H2O International, accommodation from the Boulders Beach and Whale View Manor guest houses and Southern Right Hotel, a Derevko wetsuit, a top-class skateboard from Surf Zone and other prizes worth thousands.

Registration for the world record attempt closes at 1.30pm and the organisers are hoping that even more than last year’s 349 surfers will line-up on the beach at 1.45 for the mass paddle out and then go on to set a record of more than 100 surfers on the same wave between 2pm and 3pm that other organisations worldwide will find difficult to eclipse.

Participants are urged to register by downloading the form from the South Africa page on the www.earthwave2007.com website to avoid the long queues at the event. The first 500 to register receive a unique commemorative certificate of participation kindly donated by Immanuel Creations in Valyland. Pictures of the action will be available for download from the websites of the official event photographers - Alan van Gysen www.avgphoto.co.za and Clive Maasch www.surfpix.co.za

After exiting the water the participants stand to win more prizes from the lucky draw before the second Surfboard Art Challenge auction that will include two giant 2007 Billabong Pro J-Bay posters signed by the world’s top 45 surfers.

The action continues at the official Earthwave after-party at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay where the final surfboard artworks and more than R10 000 in accommodation at the British Apartment Hotel in Simonstown will be on the block as revellers await the results of the Earthwave world record attempts in England, Argentina, Brazil and Tahiti.

The entire Earthwave project has been conceived and coordinated by the father and son duo of Paul and Dene Botha to showcase the global surfing community and issue a ‘call to action’ on how to reduce our impact on climate change. The event will also raise funds for worthy environmental causes such as the Cape Town based Shark Spotters and the SPU who clean up the beaches, both of whom will be presenting talks and displays at Muizenberg.

Other beneficiaries include the Supertubes Surfing Foundation that does so much to preserve the ecological integrity of Jeffreys Bay, one of the worlds top surf spots, and Loadtheshow whose online music site provides free downloads, pays royalties to the artists and reduces having to manufacture, package and transport CD’s, and who also designed and created the www.earthwave2007.com website where there are details of all seven events being staged around the world on Sunday

The organisers are thankful for cash donations received from the likes of Corner Surf Shop, Denise Huber Estates, Alien Computers, Rusty Surfwear, Derevko Wetsuits, Harbour House and the Brass Bell, as well as the many others who not only contributed product or vouchers, but cash too.

These funds, and those raised via the fund raising efforts around the event, will be pooled and after donations to the beneficiaries mentioned above, the Kahuna Surfing Academy intends to start an Earthwave Scholarship Fund that will provide a bursary at the University of Cape Town (UCT) for a student to study Earth Sciences, specialising in the effects of climate change on the world’s oceans and waves.

So get down to the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge at Muizenberg Corner on Sunday where you will not only be part of an historic occasion but also have plenty of fun, get the opportunity to win or bid for valuable and unique items and contribute to a worthy cause on the same day as thousands as other people in seven nations round the world.

The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is endorsed by the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the Surfrider Foundation

Motivated by the immense interest in the record breaking attempt on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave simultaneously’ in Cape Town in September 2006 and inspired by Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth”, the Kahuna Surfing Academy (KSA) created the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge.

Convinced that they could break the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ after the paltry total of 44 was confirmed as the new record by the Lahinch Surf School in May 2006, the duo of veteran watersports promoter Paul Botha and his son Dene, South Africa’s highest internationally qualified surf instructor, registered an attempt on the record with the GWR organisation in London.
