The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is an initiative created by the Cape Town based Kahuna Surfing Academy that showcases the global nature of the surfing community, highlights their environmental concerns and issues a "call to action" on how we can reduce our impact on climate change.

By staging attempts on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ on beaches worldwide on the first Sunday in September annually, Earthwave provides a platform for surfers of every age and ability to participate in an enjoyable group activity.

Leveraging the newsworthiness of world record attempts, Earthwave seeks to raise awareness of the threat of Global Warming and its effects on our oceans and waves while mobilizing the trendsetting surfing fraternity through practical advice on how to become part of the solution to the most devastating problem ever faced by mankind.

Global Warming is the greatest threat facing mankind today. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to learn more about this problem and then become proactive in reducing our impact on the environment. PAUL BOTHA

September 2nd will be a day to remember for the city of Santos and for Brazilian surfing, when the city will host the Ecorodovias Earthwave Surf Festival, in a clear demonstration of concern with the environment and the cause against global warming. The event was organized by the legendary Rico de Souza and officially presented to the mayor of Santos, João Paulo Tavares Papa, who provided his full support.

Serving as the event’s “ambassadors” will be the greatest Brazilian surfer of all times, Picuruta Salazar; the head of TV Tribuna, Roberto Clemente Santini, who will also help organize the event; the investor relations officer of Ecorodovias, Roberto Koiti Nakagome; and the head of the Santos Surf Association, Diniz Iozzi, known as Pardhal.

Earthwave will be held simultaneously in seven countries, with surfers attracting worldwide attention by attempting to break the world record for the greatest number of surfers on the same wave. This global challenge will be held on September 2nd from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Quebra-Mar in Santos, one of the “shrines” of Brazilian surfing and which offers a natural amphitheatre from which to view the attempt.

A large structure will be built to attract the public and many simultaneous events will be sponsored, such as a paddling competition; a Stand Up presentation (an event that has been practiced in Hawaii that uses a special board and paddles, reminiscent of the traditional canoes from the archipelago that gave rise to modern surfing); a battery of celebrity surfers; and an exhibition from the surf museum of Rico de Souza, featuring the world’s largest surf board that set the Guinness Book world record.

Motivated by the immense interest in the record breaking attempt on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding the same wave simultaneously’ in Cape Town in September 2006 and inspired by Al Gore’s film “An Inconvenient Truth”, the Kahuna Surfing Academy (KSA) created the Earthwave Global Surf Challenge.

Convinced that they could break the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ after the paltry total of 44 was confirmed as the new record by the Lahinch Surf School in May 2006, the duo of veteran watersports promoter Paul Botha and his son Dene, South Africa’s highest internationally qualified surf instructor, registered an attempt on the record with the GWR organisation in London.
