The Earthwave Global Surf Challenge is an initiative created by the Cape Town based Kahuna Surfing Academy that showcases the global nature of the surfing community, highlights their environmental concerns and issues a "call to action" on how we can reduce our impact on climate change.
By staging attempts on the Guinness World Record for the ‘most surfers riding one wave simultaneously’ on beaches worldwide on the first Sunday in September annually, Earthwave provides a platform for surfers of every age and ability to participate in an enjoyable group activity.
Leveraging the newsworthiness of world record attempts, Earthwave seeks to raise awareness of the threat of Global Warming and its effects on our oceans and waves while mobilizing the trendsetting surfing fraternity through practical advice on how to become part of the solution to the most devastating problem ever faced by mankind.

It seems everyone in the country, if not the world, is going to have their eyes glued on Surfer’s Corner at Muizenberg on Sunday 2 September as the local surfing community makes another attempt on the Guinness World Record. “Entries are pouring in for the inaugural Earthwave Global Surf Challenge where SA is being joined by six other nations on four continents in trying to break the record and raise awareness for Global Warming,“ said Dene Botha of the Kahuna Surfing Academy.
Check the website at www.earthwave2007.com created and sponsored by Load the Show, where anyone can sign up for the attempt. The day will start at 10am with talks and demos in the marquee tent and a free mass ‘Learn to Surf’ lesson will start at 11am conducted by local surf schools Surf Shack, Cape Town Surf Adventures and Learn2Surf.
The Surfboard Art Challenge has already attracted 10 beautifully painted surfboards from all over the country, including local manufacturer s Town & Country, Dutchie and Stubby, that will be auctioned off by Steve Pike of Wavescape during the day.
And local businesses are generously donating exceptional prizes for fundraising activities such a raffles and the Dig for Gold with over R10 000 worth of accommodation provided by British Hotel Apartments and Boulders Beach Guesthouse, custom wetsuits from Reef and O’Neill and meal vouchers from 783, Harbour House and Empire Café up for grabs.
Others like Denise Huber Estates have joined in by sponsoring infrastructure costs while Immanuel Creations provide the posters and certificates that the first 500 participants receive and Surf Zone provides the water safety on the day.
So get down to the Deep South’s biggest surf festival next Sunday and let’s show the world that last year was no fluke and we’re still the most proactive surf community on the planet! See you there!
